You will be surprised to know the reason why majority of websites, user accounts and computers being hacked daily around the world. You have guessed it right, it is the choice of the password. Most of these attacks could be avoided only by choosing a strong password consisting of capital letters, numbers and symbols.
It’s is both funny and saddening to see that most of the passwords which are leaked online are mostly six to seven character passwords composed of names, birth dates and common dictionary words which can be easily guessed and cracked by brute force attacks.
If you haven’t yet heard about brute force attack which is a common form of password hack attacks, then let me tell you more about it and how you can secure your online accounts just by choosing a strong password.
A brute force attack is involved using a software or a script which keeps on trying or guessing passcodes which are mostly dictionary words and simple names without any symbols or complex characters. According to some statistics, it takes just 10 minutes for the hacker to brute force into a server if the password is 6 to 7 characters with no symbols and capital letters. Now, by adding just a few capital letters and a symbol, the time required to crack that password via brute force jumps to 3 years and nobody has the resources, tools or the time to wait for the tool to brute force into such a complex password.
That is exactly the role which the symbols and capital letters play in the formation of a secure password. Now that I told you a lot about having a secure password. Let me introduce you guys to a useful tool which will ensure that your current password is strong and secure. We call it the “Password Strength Checker” tool. Let’s see how easily this tool can check whether your password is secure or not.
Using Password Strength Checker tool is very easy, you only need to input your password in the field and the tool will inform you about the strength of your password. Ideally, your password strength should be anywhere in between Medium or Strong. I personally use a 13 character password which contains dispersed alphabets and symbols and I suggest you guys to use something like that to stay secure
Now this is a genuine reason why some people like to select an easy to remember password. They think that they can never remember a complex password, so they choose their birth date or the name of their pets or worse, even though they select a complex password, they make the mistake of writing down the password.
Let me warn you that writing down a password negates the use of a password in the first place since anyone you know can access your accounts through that password. You can remember the password by frequently using it or else you can choose a password from a random sentence. Let me show you that technique:
If the random sentence is: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Then your password can be: TqBfJ0TlD.
See how easy it is to create a complex password? I have used the first letter of all the words in the sentence (made every alternate letter capital) and replaced “o” with the number 0 and concluded the password with a period (.), you can do any similar variation and get a secure password for yourself.
